Birds Fly opens with a rubato chorale with woodwind doubles, lead by piano and trumpet, before launching into a soaring jazz waltz. Inspired by my young daughter’s first trip to the zoo, and the following evening, where she was so excited to tell us that ‘birds fly’, she repeated it in her sleep for some time afterwards. A warm and exciting piece, featuring trumpet and lead overdrive guitar, before ending with a rising chorale under the trumpet soloist. Great opener or closer for an experienced high school or mid-level college ensemble.
